How does coursework apply to your job (structural engineers)?

I have just completed a structural analysis course at the university level. We covered subjects like Mohr's method, Principles of Virtual Forces and Stationary Potential Energy, etc. etc. I was wondering if these sorts of methods/principles are used really when practicing structural engineering or is it mostly having a computer program perform that kind of work. Basically, in your daily life, what aspects of your education affect your work the most? How does coursework apply to your job (structural engineers)?
Most of what you learn is for giving you the background (so a lot of it does affect my work), but is not directly used in practice since computer analysis is so prevalent. Understanding bending moment diagrams, stress and strain (Mohrs) and buckling are most important. Plasticity, fracture and fatigue are also very useful.
