Applying via http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/arti鈥?/a>

Do I get the ID and am I able to use it immediately after filling out the form?

How will the IRS know how much customers or donors donate? How to apply for my organization's Tax ID?
You can apply on-line for an ID# at the web site you cite in your question. You will be able to obtain the number immediately. Once you have the number tou can use it to operate the organization.

As opposed to the previous answer you can operate as an exempt organization for 15 months without having received your approval as an exempt organization. If you don't receive the approval within the15 months your would be taxed as a regular corporation. If you receive the exempt approval the entity files a form 990.

If you have not file the exemption application I would recommend strongly that you get help from a CPA who is familiar with filing the form. How to apply for my organization's Tax ID?
To get the 501 (c) (3) status is a very lengthy process. I set up a non-profit in 2002. It took about eight months and a couple of hundred hours of work. You can obtain a number but you cannot function as a non-profit until your status is approved. That means that anything donated cannot be tax deductible until your status is officially recognized. Good luck. As I recall the initial form was 23 or more pages.
If you call the Irs number and follow the prompts they with connect you to the right place and they will issue you a number and mail you proof that they gave you one. You need to keep accurate receipts and records of everything that goes in or out. Spent, received, invested etc. all must be reported because they can ask to see your complete record at anytime -but rarely do. The IRS.gov website can answer alot of your questions and have many links and resources.
yes you get an immediate id and yes it is valid immediately
